This is The Society of Literacy and Bananas! Association! We are a group of writers aiming to do a podcast by teens, for teens (or any age of writer, for that matter). Character Activities

The week we talked about characters, we did the following activities:

You are What you Eat

List 10 random or strange foods (we did: tofu, beans, pomegranate, escargot, ravioli, waffles, potatoes, tomatoes, squash, and sourgrass). Write about a character that only has these foods in his fridge.

Occupation and Quirk

We filled one "hat" with occupations -- everything from "fireman" to "death," "hairdresser" to "hit man." Another "hat" was filled with personality quirks -- from "never takes others' advice" to "terrified of kittens," "ALWAYS tells the truth," to "terrified of kittens." (For full list of quirks, click here.) Everyone drew an occupation and a quirk and created a character.

Personifying Virtue & Sin

We each took one Heavenly Virtue and one Deadly Sin and personified them. These two characters met up in Starbucks (or somewhere), whether by accident or design. We wrote from there.

Likes and Dislikes

Choose something that you DON'T like that your character DOES, and write about it from your character's point of view.
Choose something that you DO like that your character DOESN'T, and write about it from your character's point of view.

Situation

Put your character in any form of normal situation. "Your character has to wait for a dentist's appointment..." or "Your character has to shop for groceries..." Go from there.

Unlikely Meeting

Put two unlikely characters together -- make your sidekick and your villain go shopping together, make your character's best friend and love interest go to an amusement park, etc....

If you have any character-based activities, please e-mail them to us at literacybananans@gmail.com. We appreciate any suggestions you send us!
